Programs Reaching End of Life in 2025

  • February 21, 2025

Windows 10 & Microsoft Office 2016 & 2019 are reaching End of Life in October, what does this mean for users?

What is End of Life?

End of Life, or EoL, is a term used to describe the point in time when a program or service is no longer supported by its manufacturer. This means that the company responsible for the software will no longer perform essential updates, including security patches, bug fixes, and other necessary maintenance. While these programs may still function on your device, the lack of ongoing support can lead to a host of potential issues for users.

What will happen if I don't update?

Without regular updates, the software becomes increasingly vulnerable to security threats, as any newly discovered vulnerabilities will not be addressed. This can result in a higher risk of cyberattacks, data breaches, and other security incidents. In fact, malware is often specifically designed to target devices which are running older versions of operating systems as they are a lot easier to exploit.

Additionally, as technology continues to advance, unsupported software may become incompatible with newer hardware and other software, leading to reduced functionality and performance over time. Users may find that certain features no longer work as expected, or that the software becomes slow and unreliable.

What are the benefits of updating my program?

Updating to the latest version of a program offers a multitude of advantages that go beyond just safeguarding your systems from heightened security risks. With each new version of a program, you gain access to the latest features that are designed to enhance your workflow, ultimately maximising productivity. These features often include faster processing speeds and enhanced compatibility with other soft and hardware, in turn, significantly boosting the overall efficiency of your operations.

Additionally, by keeping your software up-to-date, you ensure that your infrastructure is not only easier to manage but also more reliable. This means that your devices will operate more smoothly and responsively, reducing downtime and minimising disruptions to your business activities. This can lead to more effective collaboration amongst team members, and better data management.

Furthermore, staying current with software updates can provide access to improved customer support and service options, as manufacturers often prioritise support for the latest versions. This can be particularly beneficial in resolving any technical issues quickly and efficiently, ensuring that your business continues to run without difficulty.

When do these programs end?

Both Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2016 & 2019 will reach their End of Life on October 14th 2025. Whilst this date may seem far away right now, it is crucial to consider upgrading your systems sooner rather than later to prevent potential problems.
